What Comes First – The Web Design Or The SEO?

by Assistant on September 16, 2009

Whats the single most important aspect of web design, aesthetics or SEO? This really is the chicken and egg question of the internet age but the company you keep will have a large bearing on the answer.

Graphic design led companies will argue in many of cases that the website design is the prime consideration of course. And let’s face it without that aesthetically pleasing to the eye design a searcher will navigate away from your site within a very short space of time or so they would have you believe. But then that raises the big question of how did they find your site amongst all your competitors?

The typical web development curve goes along the lines of visual design is storyboarded for client ..website design looks visually appealing and gets client approval. What about content ok, we’ll rustle something up…..website is uploaded and time passes but only minimal traffic!

And then even more time passes by until eventually perhaps more than a few months later the situation is either so bad or the company are having to spend out on adwords that finally a search engine optimisation company gets called in or the boss starts asking questions, and before you know it you are investing in a web marketing strategy to try and rescue some website rankings.

Is this the fast road to success? The thousands of website owners that have followed this exact or similar path will certainly argue that it most definitely is not as this put up and hope web development criteria delays any websites success by far too long, and even more frightening results in huge losses of both business opportunity and profitability.

Search engines need to find content and structure in order to rank a site well but with scant regard to optimisation so often this initial chance to make the best impact when the site first gets indexed is totally wasted, if all the search engines find is a poorly optimised site with no regard paid to any SEO requirements or keyword capture.

Extra time and money spent on pre development SEO (which should at the very least include keyword research and SEO copywriting) gives an rewarding return on investment as invariably initial indexing is bound to achieve a far better website ranking from day one and even in some cases a page one result straight away.
