Work, your network marketing business, and you

by Assistant on March 28, 2009

Imagine two identical piles of dirt that must be moved an identical distance. Person A uses a kiddy shovel and takes all day. Person B uses a tractor and moves the entire pile in one scoop.

Question: Who did more work?

At least 80% of the people I ask say Person A. I believe this occurs because we tend to equate “work” with “effort”. Physics, however, defines work as results. One person struggled while the other person finished the job with ease… but they both did the same amount of work.

We are taught from day one that work equals effort. We are expected to spend 40+ years in a job with the goal of amassing enough money to live out our few remaining years in some semblance of comfort before departing this world. Talk about slavery! Most people who think they escaped this trap by starting a home-based business discover the hard way that self-employment can be an even worse trap. Working for someone else? Quit whenever you like. Working for yourself? Not that easy to quit, is it?

I’ll bet some of the people you know succeed at everything while others crash and burn no matter what they try. Are these people lucky or better or more blessed than everybody else? No. We all have the same potential for success in our lives. The key lies in our beliefs. The “real world” we live in is built around our beliefs, nothing more. I’m sure you’ve heard the maxim that 20 people witnessing the same event will provide 20 different accounts.

Do you think that success equals working a job for your entire adult life? If so, then you will get a job and will do everything to keep that job. Decades later, you may be able to enjoy a few rounds of golf or a cruise or two before departing this world… if you’re lucky! Live too long and you may exhaust your retirement resources. Die too soon and you’ll leave it all behind. You’ll either die unable to take it with you or live in poverty. How’s that for depressing? The mechanics of this phenomenon are quite simple: Whatever one invests energy in grows. Invest energy in the idea that work equals struggle and struggle you will.

What about you? If you think that you “work hard” or feel that you can’t or shouldn’t do something because it’s “too hard”, then you define work as effort. Far too many home-based business owners I meet are struggling just to stay afloat. These unfortunate souls desperately want more from their businesses but dread the thought of thrashing even harder in the murky waters of their own making.

If this describes you or someone you know, then I have wonderful news: It doesn’t have to be like this. There is a better way. Start defining work as results instead of effort. Place all of your focus on what you want to achieve… and the easiest way(s) to reach those goals. Do that and you will struggle a lot less while getting far better results far more easily. Never forget that your home-based business exists to serve your needs; you don’t exist to serve its needs.

All you have to do to start freeing yourself from struggle forever is forget the notion that your current way of doing things is the only way. People resist this because they feel that change equals admitting they’re wrong. Not true. Your current methods have served you well and now you can move on to new methods. Sure, they may need some updating but that doesn’t make you wrong. Think about your childhood. Were you wrong for using diapers and crawling on the floor or did you simply outgrow those habits? There is nothing whatsoever wrong with growth.

Next, examine your goals and seek the easiest ways to accomplish them. Be creative!!This next step is a lot of fun: Go through your goals one by one and ask yourself how you can accomplish each one with ease. This will require creativity but you will soon find yourself filled with all kinds of ideas. Break your goals up into bite-sized weekly chunks, take action every week, and reward yourself for each small step. This helps you take joy from the journey. After all, what is life but a journey?

Think this exercise will only yield moderate gains? Think again! One client of mine tripled her profits while working half as many hours. She effectively boosted her hourly rate by six times…. And her story is anything but exceptional. I’ve seen similar results again and again.

I make you this solemn promise: Learn to define “work” as results and seek the easiest way to achieve your desired results, and you will enjoy more profit with less struggle and more happiness than ever before.
