Being green is the new buzz word regards to doing business today. We are all being told how the planet is doomed from our wasteful, gas guzzling, litter throwing culture and it is true. Okay perhaps the planet is not doomed and this whole ‘environmentally friendly’ band wagon is actually a political stunt but regardless who are we to say if it is or isn’t. But there is an opportunity for all to benefit as people become more obsessed with being environmentally friendly. By your organisation being the environmentally UNfriendly makes you stand out like a sore thumb and have a baying mob of people with pitch forks after you so to conform can give your company a great amount of PR and with it a great amount of business.
Naturally to be green is more difficult for some companies than others and unfairly many organisations are scrutinised when in fact many others go under the radar. IT offices for example use up a lot of electricity and yet the pressure to be socially responsible and ‘green’ is not as intense as companies that rely on automobiles and then fall under the carbon emissions problem.
After working in an international removals company for over 30 years now I have began to find ways to be greener. It is difficult considering we rely solely on travel however a few simple measures have helped rid this type of industry of the consensus that we are part of a problem.
The first area where we can help is through recycling. The amount of packaging that is used and wasted is almost a cause for concern; however recycling what is used is a very effective way of already becoming greener.
Another way we can become greener is to introduce more technology. Instead of using paper for documentation purposes we can use electronic devices therefore reducing the amount of paper wasted. Even the little things help such as having Sat Nav and find the best route and shave off any extra mile that may have been needed.
On top of all this there is a lot of rule changes especially from the British International Freight Association (BIFA). This has involved education customers on ways to make freight forwarding more environmentally friendly.
There are ways for freight forwarders to become greener and if you choose to follow suit then shout about it! Marketing your company as environmentally friendly can get you that little bit more business. But if you’re going to say you are environmentally friendly then make sure you are just that as lying will do unrepairable damage to your company.
