Beginner’s Guide to Website Marketing. Helpful Facts to Keep in Mind

by Assistant on June 11, 2009

Online Marketing is one of the most difficult parts about being a webmaster. I wrote this to help those new to the online world understand some basic misconceptions that are normal for new webmasters and hopefully point them in the right direction in their website marketing campaign. In today’s online world with the millions of people every day fighting over every bit of traffic they get; it is easy to see why 97% of websites and blogs fail. First don’t be scared even though according to google the number of unique URL’s has passed 1 trillion it is still possible to succeed if you have the right mind set and are willing to work harder than your competition.

First let’s dispose of a couple myths portrayed by the media and ignorance of a newbie webmaster. 1st to earn money online all you need to do is create a web presence through either a blog or website and visitors will come. Let me restate the fact that there is now over a trillion unique URL’s; what this means for you is every visitor you receive will be from you working harder than the next guy on your marketing campaign which should include building backlinks (hyperlinks of your domain on a website other than your own) and SEO (Search Engine Optimization). You will be in a constant battle with not only your competitors, but also Google and other major search engines always trying to be higher and better than the rest of the websites in your niche (category of website or blog you construct such as business, marketing, and personal). 2nd myth is when marketing online you will see the pay offs of your efforts instantly. This is the reason 97% percent of people attempting to start making money online fail in their endeavors they work and work without realizing it takes a minimum of 6 months to become established and usually 1-2 years before they will begin to see a true monetary pay off for their online efforts. I hate to say it, but working online will be much harder than a regular 9-5 job since it is constantly changing and the competition is ever increasing. Now we have covered the bad news of starting an online endeavor let’s move on to the good parts of working online as I do currently.

The greatest thing about working online is there are not a set number of hours you have to work during the week. Let say I want to take a vacation to Florida; rather than putting in a leave request and waiting to see if it is approved I pack my lap top and take off for a couple of weeks checking on my website and adsense account each night from my hotel room. A lot of people confuse this with working less; trust me I put in more hours a week than the average individual. The reason I made it online was because I love being online, if you cannot imagine yourself being online for 10-12 hours daily attempting to work online full time probably should not be one of your goals. I love what I do and have a hard time sleeping without thinking of the next marketing system I am going to implement and what the effects will be on my Google SERPs (the page after a person types in a search query into Google) position. You may ask yourself how much money can I make? Thousands? Millions? Well it really depends, I have been online for a year now and usually take home a couple thousand a month. The best thing about working online is the marketing efforts that you put in the begging of your campaign will usually take six months to a year before you begin to feel the affect of your efforts. Each month my website and blogs do a little better which in turn makes me work a little harder. For you new online marketers if you are not willing to spend 6 months penniless and work hard each day promoting your site you will probably be one of the ones that make it as a full time webmaster or blogger.

For conclusion I would like to go over what a new webmaster should be doing when they first get online. The first step is to get on Digital Point Forums which you can find through a Google search. These forums I am on daily and will keep you up to date will all the newest search engine updates as well as all of the old and any new marketing techniques being used. I have also generated a lot of new friends online from these forums which help in my marketing campaign because we all market together. A new webmaster should also be concerned with becoming indexed with Google which you can do by submitting your website to www.digg.com or your blog to http://technorati.com. Also if your new you should constantly be building backlinks to your website by placing the link in directories, social bookmarking sites, writing articles, and writing press releases.
