Teaching English To Speakers Of Other Languages In The UK

by Assistant on December 11, 2009

teaching is one of the most worthwhile careers out there as you positively impact on the lives of others. In the UK there are many ways that you can teach; at a public school, a state school, as a tutor, in higher education or at another learning institution. History, English and Science are popular subjects for new teachers in the past few years with many places being oversubscribed and newly qualified teachers having no job when they finish their degree. However there is a huge demand for people teaching English to speakers of other languages in the UK for anyone needing to increase their knowledge of the language.

The qualifications you need to teach English to foreign language speakers depends on where you will be teaching. Most people will not be able to start a TESOL career if they do not have a graduate degree. If you are looking to teach in state schools within the UK then you will also need to have completed a PGCE.

The tasks and roles that you will have to fulfil whilst working as a TESOL teacher include your general classroom teaching, classroom management, lesson planning and preparation, preparing and setting examinations, giving feedback on oral and written work and basic administration such as registration and attendance records. If you are working for a large school, you may be asked to get involved with class excursions, school events and playground duties as well.

It is not just schools where TESOL teaching takes place however. Students from foreign countries have to reach a certain level of English speaking competence before they can attend a UK university and businesses also employ TESOL teachers. most of this type of work takes place in commercial language schools around Britain.

You can get permanent contracts in schools, especially in inner city regions, whereas commercial jobs tend to be temporary and seasonal. If you think you would like to teach English abroad then you should look into Teaching English as a foreign language or TEFL.

Hi,
After finishing French Teaching Academy, I attended online program of TESOL.
I share full content of the lessons as well as the tasks on my blog posts.
They might be helpful for present or future ELT teachers.
