Guidelines and Steps Towards Hassle Free Appraisal

by Assistant on August 22, 2009

Appraisals at the work place do not have to be a headache. Most organizations use appraisal performance as the basis of promoting employees, raising salaries or issuing bonuses. Because of the final reward at the end of the performance, an appraisal room can end up being a battle field if the guidelines are not clearly set.

One of the most effective ways of making appraisals to be stress free is by communicating to all employees how the scores will be determined. All performance indication parameters should be documented where all can refer if need be.

By setting clear and precise targets, employers ensure that there is fairness in evaluation and that everyone in the company knows what is expected of them. For example, a sales person would have a target of acquiring one thousand customers each month being rated as exceptional. If he fails to meet this performance indicator then his rating is not debatable.

Another way of avoiding fights at appraisals is by continuously carrying out evaluations – probably every quarter – instead of having only one major appraisal at the end of the year. This helps the appraised employee to gauge their performance continuously and strive to achieve better results in their weak areas.

It would also be advisable to have each person’s targets linked to the larger objectives of the business so that each employee understands their role in achieving the company’s goals. Stretching the targets each time ensures that the employees do not fail to put in more effort once they have done the basic work.

After the appraisals have been done, it would also help to have each person comment on the appraisal process and give their recommendations if any. This feedback would help in making the appraisal process smoother and acceptable to many if not all the employees.
