Focus on Priorities
We all know that in order to be successful, we need to focus on priorities. But how many of us do consistently and regularly? For focusing on priorities, you need to make a deliberate attempt on a day to day basis until that habit gets ingrained in you permanently and it becomes a second nature. Focusing on priorities make people think and successful people think productively, concretely, constructively, creatively, deliberately, purposefully and above clearly. They don’t belive on assumptions, hope or expectations without serious analysis.
Here’s a good illustration. A teacher pulled out a one-gallon jar and set it on the desk in front of him. When the jar was filled to the top with rocks, he asked, “Is the jar full?” Everyone said “Yes.”
He then dumped some gravel in and shook the jar. The gravel filled the spaces between the rocks. Then asked, “Is the jar full? By this time the class was onto him. “Probably not,” they answered. He then started dumping in sand, and it went into all the spaces between the rocks and the gravel. Once more he asked, “Is this jar full?” “No!” the class shouted. He next poured water in until the jar was filled to the brim. Then he asked, “What is the point of this?”
LESSON: Ask yourself what are the “big rocks” (priorities) in my personal life and career? Am I putting them in the jar first?
What kinds of people are most likely to seize an opportunity once it opens up? Typically it is those who are:
- Dissatisfied – they are always looking for improvement.
- Creative – they believe there are better ways.
- Aggressive – they don’t stay on the sidelines.
- Insightful – they look beyond the obvious.
- Risk-takers – they don’t expect gain without pain.
- Communicators – they make sure they are understood.
- Diligent – their brain rests only when they sleep.
- Persistent – they sometimes fall back but rarely give up.
- Resilient – they bounce back quickly.
- Self-Confident – they are prepared.
- Unselfish – they share credit where it is due.
The individual at his work place is considered successful to the extent he / she is able to focus on priorities ceaselessly and continuously without getting tired. The said act of theirs shall not only take him a long way in building his career but he will be termed as an extremely valuable employee of the organization.
